Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters
New research reveals that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using these treatments must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
